If you want a new sport for 2015, try rowing

Twice a year, the Marina Aquatic Center holds rowing tryouts in Marina del Rey. The next one is scheduled for Jan. 5. Boys and girls ages 13 to 18 are invited. No experience is required.

I happened to visit the center on Thursday afternoon. It has grown to more than 110 high school athletes participating, with students from Loyola, Mira Costa and Santa Monica leading the way.

To be on the water in darkness except for LED lights identifying the boats was something else. Up and down the marina they went. It was cool, with no wind, but none of the athletes felt cold, because they were working so hard.

For girls, the opportunity for college scholarships is plentiful. For boys, it’s a lot harder. But many participate because they like the competition, the exercise and the people they hang out with.

It’s certainly invigorating rowing and getting to see a couple million dollar yachts pass by.

Three female athletes signed letters of intent on Wednesday, two with UCLA and another with Gonzaga.
