This year Gloria Vanderbilt jeans came back, touting styles for all shapes and sizes — the campaign, called “We Are All One,” champions inclusivity — and boasting prices more affordable than a spin class.
I was made privy to the line when my grandma, Diane, mentioned that her friends had been rhapsodizing over a pair of GV stretch jeans. I was skeptical at first. Now let’s be clear: My grandmother has a wicked sense of style. I essentially lived in her black suede coat last winter. Even so, I assumed a pair of jeans that rang in at less than $30 must be frumpy (or at least headed into SNL’s mom-jeans territory).
But when my grandmother received her Gloria Vanderbilt Ladies’ Amanda Stretch Denim Jeans, I decided to try them on, too, and, well, I just couldn’t take them off. Not only were they mind-blowingly comfortable and stretchy, they happened to be rather flattering, and, dare I say, hip. I’m now convinced that the Amanda Jean — which also comes in plus sizes as well as a bunch of different colors — will look good on just about any figure, à la Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Remember jeggings, which were popular circa 2010? Yeah, they’re sort of like that, if jeggings had a more forgiving, sophisticated cousin.
They sit snugly just above the hips and fall at the ankle, and can be cuffed for a more breezy, summery look. While my grandma likes to wear them full-leg with an untucked shirt, I prefer to wear them higher up on my waist with a belt and cuffed at the ankle with a heeled boot. Really though, they can be worn however you see fit: in the office paired with a blazer; at home with a T-shirt while cleaning; matched with a pair of heels for a night on the town.
And if, God forbid, something spills on your Amanda jeans (say, a glass of red wine), know that the dry-cleaning bill and a new glass of Cabernet combined would probably cost you more than getting a new pair of jeans.
