Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed products and single out the most worthwhile. While we’ve covered power tools like the best lawn mowersleaf blowers, chainsaws, and even a power drill brush that cleans the bathroom, here we’re zeroing in on the best power drills as reviewed on Amazon. (Note that reviews have been edited for length and clarity.)

Best 20-volt cordless drill

“Great lightweight cordless drill. It’s very well balanced, making it easy to drill straight. Also, it’s neat and easy to store in my small garage, which is important to me, as is the fact that the battery is quick to recharge. I’m an engineer’s daughter, I take on many household fix-it jobs, and I love power tools that actually fit in my hand. I would totally recommend this drill/driver.”

Best 18-volt cordless drill

“This drill is lightweight and easy to use; it’s especially good for females since some of the other drills out there are really heavy. The extra battery is very convenient, and the battery life is great. I’ve already used it multiple times: to hang shelves, fix broken furniture. I haven’t used it for heavy-duty building so I can’t speak to that. I like that it comes in a handy storage bag to keep everything together, and I love the teal color.”

Best 8-volt cordless drill

“Drills truly have come a long way. I remember back in the day when you had these two large rods as batteries and a bulky charger to plug them into. This baby uses a lithium battery that is smaller than your average cell phone battery and is pretty much identical to a cell phone charger (micro USB). But is it powerful, you ask? Well, I did use it to drill into my bathroom wall and hang a curved shower rod. It held up to the job beautifully. I have the utmost confidence in this drill. I love it, and I’m certain you will, too.”

Best brushless drill

“This is a great drill! It’s compact and powerful. We built benches and boardwalks in a park with no electricity in sight. It held its own against equipment anyone else was using. It drilled holes and drove screws all day long. I charged both batteries each day and never had to switch. It seems the brushless motor is much more efficient. And these were the small batteries. … You won’t go wrong with this one.”

Best two-speed cordless drill

“Really good drill, for the price. Compact, lightweight, powerful, and the battery will last for a relatively long time (I can use it on and off for around 15 minutes a day per week without having to recharge). The two speeds are great, and I highly recommend getting a two-speed drill: it makes driving screws at a low speed with high torque easy, as well as drilling at a high speed. Good quality and looks good, too. I have many power tools, and I can recognize a good-quality one.”

Best lightweight cordless drill with light

“This little brute has plenty of power to handle tough drilling jobs, as well as plenty of torque settings (and two speed settings) to allow you to do fine/finish work without stripping screws or over-sinking. I have drilled, or driven, everything from concrete to kitchen cabinet fixtures and it has performed well in all tasks. On a full charge, I get about four hours of moderate use, and with the included quick-charge charger, the backup battery will be ready to go when you need it. The LED light is surprisingly effective. The light weight really helps to cut down on arm fatigue, especially when drilling at shoulder height and above. The compact size really comes in handy for drilling in tight spaces, but don’t let the small size dissuade you from going for this one. This thing has power comparable to my 18-volt, and I now use it as my go-to drill.”

Best cordless drill with long battery life

“Excellent drill. I have charged it once since I got it, and more than six months later, it’s still going. It handles high-torque screwing well, and the different bits are very useful.”

Best pink cordless drill

“I love this drill. It has the power to do just about everything I need it to do. I put up shelves in my storage building. I’ve put up two motion lights on the outside corners of the house. I find myself looking for more projects just so I can use my pink drill.”

Best cordless drill with magnetic bit holder

“I love this drill! It has plenty of power for what I need it to do. I have drilled plenty of pilot holes in dark places, where the light really helps out. I’ve used the magnetic tray to hold about 30 2-inch screws at a time while I work. The bit change is easily accomplished with one hand. I also like the torque settings … I have screwed hinges into cabinet doors, hinged small boxes, assembled mini-sawtooth hangers onto small, delicate scroll saw pictures, driven screws up to 3 inches, and had no problems. The low torque settings make the gears slip so that you could not strip screw heads if you wanted to. Overall this is an AMAZING drill for the price, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.”

Best cordless drill kit

“This drill is a beast. Dewalt’s products have never let me down, and so far this drill is no exception. It’s a no-nonsense drill. There are very few bells and whistles, it’s just a powerful workhorse of a drill with great batteries. It’s extremely small and lightweight — probably half as heavy as what I’m used to holding with normal, NiCad battery-powered drills. But after getting used to the lighter weight of the battery, it feels balanced and stable, and is a good fit for my larger hands. It has at least the same amount of punch as a bigger, heavier drill, lasting longer with no fade.”

Best cordless drill kit with 30 accessories

“Awesome drill with a surprisingly small profile, and I was able to fit it inside my cabinet with a drill bit to install some shelves. The power is way more than what I had expected, which was a nice surprise. The accessories are great and save me the expense of having to buy separate drill bits. For the price, it’s a great deal and it’s definitely useful for little things around the house.”

Best corded drills

“So far, so good. Used it to drill a bunch of holes in thick sheet metal and this thing powers through like a champ. Easy to control the speed and the front handle makes it easy to control, period. I can’t speak to its longevity but I used it for almost a week straight drilling through heavy materials and it’s shown no signs of wear!”

“I bought this for an upcoming project for which having a cordless drill seemed like a challenge due to the sheer number of screws I’ll be drilling. I haven’t owned a corded drill in at least 15 years, and that model was fairly lackluster. Yesterday, due to laziness, I needed a drill and didn’t feel like going to grab my cordless out of the shed, so I took this one out of the box and put it to work. My God, the torque on this is insane. I was removing cabinets that had been mounted on concrete walls, and this drill was tearing them apart. It took a little getting used to to dial the torque back by not pulling the trigger as hard, but on my cordless drill, I have a torque selection dial, which I wish this had; that’s my only complaint about this drill — it’s too powerful. (Something I never thought I would say.)”
