See the supermoon at Mammoth Mountain

For the first time, Mammoth Mountain will host a Supermoon Viewing Party on Saturday from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Guests can take an evening gondola ride to the summit and enjoy live music, food and drink and one of nature’s most spectacular scenes.
The cost is $15. It’s free for kids 12 and under, who also get complimentary ice cream treats.
Watching a full moon ascend over the Eastern Sierra from the top of Mammoth Mountain is a special treat in any case. But seeing a spectacular “supermoon” rise from a perch on the summit may be worth the 300-mile drive from L.A. to this ski and snowboard resort.
A so-called supermoon occurs when a full or new moon is at its closest point to Earth in orbit. When this occurs, the moon appears up to 30% brighter and 14% bigger to sky watchers.
Participants can also take a lighted walk to the lakes basin overlook from the summit, which is an ideal location for moonrise photography.
